Message from the President:

Dear Members:

As we approach the holidays, on behalf of the board I would like to wish all of our members a happy, healthy and safe season.  I know as human resource professionals we are all sensitive to the shifting economic climate and will keep the Northeast Ohio workforce and our colleagues in our thoughts.

I’m pleased to announce that your NOHRPS board has approved renewing our partnership with Business Volunteers Unlimited.  NOHRPS will sponsor five members during 2009 to participate in BVU’s Volunteer Trustee Institutes through which professionals are trained and referred to serve on nonprofit boards.  Brian Broadbent, co-chair of programming and President of BVU, will provide more details regarding this benefit at our December meeting.

I recently attended a meeting sponsored by the Human Resource Planning Society which is now located in Chicago.  In attendance were many of the presidents of HRPS affiliates from across the country.  I’d like to take a moment to share a few highlights of the NOHRPS/HRPS affiliation and the recent meeting: 

• HRPS has members from across the country and plans various programs, webinars and conferences.  It recently established a partnership with Smith Bucklin, a shared services professional association, to better support its members.   
• There are also affiliate members, such as most of you that maintain a membership with an affiliate, but are not necessarily a member of national HRPS.  There is only a 15 percent overlap between national members and affiliate members.  HRPS, its affiliates, and Smith Bucklin are discussing and evaluating how they can better partner to serve the needs of human resource professionals, both nationally and locally through the affiliates.
• HRPS periodically convenes conference calls to facilitate idea sharing between affiliate program chairs and affiliate membership chairs.  It was through such a discussion that NOHRPS brought Tammy Erickson to Cleveland in October to speak on employee engagement.

As I previously mentioned, the terms for the NOHRPS Board of Directors will conclude in the summer of 2009.  Cindy McCabe, Vice President and President-elect, is chairing the nominating committee and an election will be held in the spring.  If you are interested in more information regarding committee and/or leadership opportunities, please contact Cindy McCabe.

Past Program Summary - October 15, 08

Board President Lynn Sargi, congratulated NOHRPS on our 20th anniversary.  A number of past presidents and Board members were in attendance to recognize the occasion and members stayed for a 20th year reception.
We wanted to have a dynamic program in honor of the event.  Tamara Erickson, President of the nGenera Innovation Network and McKinsey Award-winning author and expert on organizations and the changing workforce, did not disappoint us.  She presented a challenging session on engaging our employees, "What Does It Mean to Work Here?".  Tammy discussed the fact that case studies of firms that have achieved extraordinary levels of employee engagement point to a provocative conclusion:  there is no single best practice!   Companies that create "Signature Experiences", which are distinctive for each employee and illustrate the values that make them unique, become powerful ways to reinforce company values and lead to improved retention.  The results these leading companies are high employee engagement, high customer satisfaction, and high productivity with employee relationships that capture both hearts and minds. 
Members found it to be one of the most practical sessions in recent memory and rated it 4.75 on a 5.0 scale.  We hope to see you at our next meeting.
