NOHRPS Newsletter - October 2010

Date Sent: 10/07/2010

Message from the President:

Dear Members:
Fall is here and with it comes another program year for NOHRPS! Your program committee has put together an outstanding line up this year, beginning with last month’s awesome event at Hyland Software. What a great opportunity to not only visit one of the crown jewels in our community, but also to hear this organization’s incredible story and the strategic role of HR from CEO A J Hyland himself!

In the current dynamic business climate, staying in tune with emerging issues through cutting edge programs and the opportunity to dialog and knowledge share with other professionals is vital. Part of the depth and breadth of that professional exchange is incumbent on you, our members.

As a NOHRPS member you know that a strong community of professionals dedicated to strategic HR excellence is at the core of our association. But did you know that the best way to maximize your benefits within this network is to expand it? You are the greatest testimony to the benefit of membership! When you share the benefits of NOHRPS with another strategic HR colleague you not only help enhance the resources you need to excel in your career, you also help make a stronger impact on our profession.

As the primary professional society for strategic HR leaders, know that we are continuously working to meet your needs for relevant content and community. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or any other member of the Board.

I look forward to seeing you at the next program on Thursday, November 18th, at our new meeting location, Embassy Suites in Independence.

Past Program Summary - September 23 , 2010

The September kick off at Hyland Software has received positive reviews.  Many have mentioned that it is a gift to hear how a major CEO perceives the value of the HR team and HR processes.  AJ Hyland told the story of the growth phases of Hyland Software, a firm with 1,000 employees, that is one of the premier technology firms in NE Ohio.  He did not mince words explaining how the Hyland family had  ‘seat of the pants’ HR processes when the company was in its infancy.  As Hyland Software has grown, so has the sophistication of HR.  He noted the way HR has helped instill a Hyland culture, provide processes that are seen as more equitable to employees and provide oversight to help manage risk.  Many of you commented that AJ was the type of CEO we would all want to work for!  When it comes to HR, he gets it.  Hyland’s culture is one that incorporates fun, hard work, a sense of community, and an intense commitment to innovate and dominate in its marketplace.  Hyland has such a unique culture and work environment that many NOHRPS members took a tour and were impressed with its onsite day care, onsite employee services, and two slides.

It appears from early submissions this will have been one of the highest rated events in recent years.  But don’t worry if you missed it.  Next up is nationally acclaimed speaker John Blumberg who is providing hard hitting business facts on the importance of our firms value system and culture.  He recently wrote the book “Good to the Core”, which was mentioned on a national HRPS conference call as an outstanding session.

Mark Your Calendar for the Upcoming Meetings listed Above

The Summer Program and Networking event created a lot of interest and many new membership applications.  It was evident that NOHRPS is a group that offers value. We want to keep the momentum growing and raise our membership beyond 200 this year.  As such, we are inviting our members to help us to sustain and grow by extending personal invitations to potential new members.

As a Member you are our best advocate; you know full well the value of our professional group.

All members have the opportunity to invite two guests at a discount rate of $50 to our Thursday, November 18th program Good to the Core:  Strategy of Ethics with speaker/author John Blumberg.

Each member who brings two guests to our November 18th event will be entered into a drawing as well as receive recognition for your contribution to the profession and NOHRPS. Four names will be drawn for a set of passes to the January, March and May 2011 NOHRPS meetings.

Watch for an email from NOHRPS.  It will contain a draft message that you can use to communicate with your potential guests for the event. This email will also have the information your guests will need to obtain the discount.

Think about people you know would benefit from participating in and contributing to NOHRPS. Criteria we use for evaluating membership eligibility are as strategic responsibilities plus:
• Head of HR for a company of any size
• Head of an HR function (Staffing/Talent, Comp & Bene,OD, etc)

Help us keep NOHRPS a strong HR professional association!  Thank you.
