Welcome Message from the President



Dear Members:
I hope that you have had a great summer. One of my personal highlights was visiting with old friends and making new acquaintances at the NOHRPS Networking and Membership Event last month at Great Lakes Brewing.
In these historically challenging times for HR, the need to stay informed and stay involved has never been more relevant. We must plan and act much more quickly than ever before, making the opportunity to dialog with other professionals and share experiences and ideas, as well as staying in tune with emerging issues and cutting-edge strategies even more valuable.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as your new President. Starting with our retreat in June, your Board of Directors has been hard at work planning what I’m sure will be an exciting year for NOHRPS!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lynn Sargi, our outgoing President, for her leadership and continued commitment to our organization. We are fortunate that she will remain active as the chair of our Advisory Committee.
We are continuously working to ensure that you get the most value from your membership. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me or any other member of the Board. 
I look forward to seeing you at the first meeting of this program year on Thursday, October 8th.

Hot August Event Sizzled with Excitement!!!

We did not know how hot of an event we planned until the registration system boiled over.   It seems like we stumbled upon a great recipe for heating up the summer with networking and new member attraction.  And the hot-topic side dish of was washed down with some our area’s finest refreshments. 

People came from all corners of Northeast Ohio.  The conversations, introductions, new friendships and idea exchange kept simmering into the evening.  I think the Great Lakes Brewing staff had to sweep the stragglers out.

We asked for your feedback on why this event was the Must Attend event of the year.  Here is what we heard:

• Cool place
• End of day format
• Casual environment
• Lots of time for conversations
• Meaningful, yet brief presentation
• And, I think one person said something about beer

Brief Summary of NOHRP’S Social Event on August 6th

On Thursday, August 6th, NOHRPS held a well attended social networking event at the Great Lakes Brewing Company.   After the 143 members and guests enjoyed visiting with friends, meeting new colleagues and dinner including fresh beer, the group heard from Dan Healy of on the topic of how the ‘Future of Recruiting is all about Social Media’.

Dan introduced his company to us and invited us to visit their blogs.  He began his talk addressing why Face book is a social media.  He encouraged members to ensure their companies have a solid presence on Face book specifically a fan page.  Dan addressed the role LinkedIn is serving in the professional world.  He shared that the average age of an individual on LinkedIn is 40 years old. 

Dan also addressed who is using Twitter and why it is actually being used by members.  He shared that the average age of Twitter users is 35 years old.  Many of the users are the ‘soccer Moms’ reconnecting with friends from high school and college.  This may not be a companies’ target audience when it comes to recruiting efforts.

Dan shared the importance of getting your target audience involved in your organization through the use of blogging with the social media.  He used examples such as Sharpie and Chili’s as excellent companies who use blogging to their advantage.  Dan also explained the why Chili’s Big Mouth blog is so popular and how it is outperforming other competition.  He encouraged the group to get involved in blogging which is where the future of recruiting is in the world of social media.   The group had an opportunity to ask questions of Dan then stay and enjoy more networking in a great setting.

10/08/2009 Economic Outlook: Regional and National,  The Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland in Cleveland, OH

Speaker: Brent Meyer, Economic Analyst, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland Program Summary: · Commentary on economic and financial issues of interest to residents and businesses in the Fourth District (Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Kentucky, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia). · Discussion of current national economic conditions. · Special emphasis on regional labor markets. About the Speaker: Brent Meyer is an economic analyst in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland. His research interests are monetary policy, macroeconomics, inflation, and forecasting. Mr. Meyer joined the Bank in 2006 as a research assistant and was promoted to economic analyst in 2007. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Hillsdale College and a master’s degree in economics from Bowling Green State University. Parking lots are available nearby. Parking will not be validated, so admission fees have been reduced by $5.

12/03/2009 Be Hip to Thrive: The Evolution of Engagement , Forum Conference Center in Cleveland, OH

Lisa Haneberg, Vice President and Organization Design Practice Lead MPI Consulting.  During this interactive session, Lisa Haneberg will offer a model of the new work context for employers. This program is focused on us as HR leaders. Ms. Haneberg will use her knowledge of national trends and explain the implications of each on our roles as HR executives. She will suggest four changes that HR professionals can make to lead their organizations. You will get clear ideas on how to capitalize on the positive aspects of these trends and the steps to mitigate the problems they produce. We will examine a new way to look at work and organization complexity, define "Social Context" and why we ought to care, explore the need to reframe and realign the middle management function and identify how we attract, hire, retain, and develop our people.

01/21/2010 Built to Change: Creating Change Capability across the Enterprise, Forum Conference Center in Cleveland, OH  

Dr. Chris Worley, Center for Effective Organizations, University of Southern California and co-author of “Built to Change“.  Each year we emphasize a program that helps us manage change. Dr. Worley has done extensive research in this space. He has authored a book, “Build to Change”, which provides seminal research on change. Often we have good ideas and strategies that never are adopted. Dr. Worley will help us consider ways to develop a framework and architecture for sustainable organizational change. He will review a case study of how Capital One strategically implemented change to achieve success by targeting resource allocation, talent management, and performance management.

03/18/2010 The Changing World of Work,  Embassy Suites Hotel Cleveland-Rockside in Independence, OH   

Tony Santora, Executive Vice President for Right Management’s Global Solutions division .  We are again focused on trends, but this time they are specifically in our Human Resources space. Mr. Santora and Right Management have done extensive research to understand three mega-trends with global implications that will significantly impact HR executives and their teams. He has indicated that the current economic situation has masked many of these trends. Prepare for the future and plan for what’s next by helping your companies and firms stay ahead of changes.
